World Card Making Day Inspiration

Sharing a few cards inspired by World Card Making Day over at my favorite crafty place, StampNation. 

Here are two card inspired by challenges there . . .

 I used gold glitter paper, a stencil, and black embossing paste for that left panel. 

And then my card below was inspired by the waters of Hawaii along with the Color Throwdown challenge. 

I created that background piece using distress inks and some Wow! embossing powder.

We're mixing things up this month with a few mixed media techniques and products.

Now on with the projects.  I have three of them for you today.  I'll start with two that I created using the same watercolor piece which I cut down to create the two projects.  The watercolor piece was created using Ken Oliver Color Bursts.

On this one, I wanted to explore using black embossing paste but in two ways.  I always struggle with matte or glossy when I buy embossing paste.  So i go with matte and then I can make it glossy by adding clear embossing paste and heating.  This first card shows a card made with matte . . . 

There was no stamping on this card - it was all stencil and embossing paste.  Even that sentiment.  The close-up below really shows how the matte paste looks.  

 So here is the second version; this one shows the embossing paste with clear embossing powder, giving it the glossy look.  Also added . . . in mixed media fashion . . . micro beads and glitter.  I put down strips of scor-tape and used two colors of beads/glitter.  

While the black paste with the clear embossing isn't quite as glossy as glossy would be, you can definitely see below how different it is from the previous card.

 

And now my final card, which I have to say started out as a hot mess!  The watercolor piece with the embossing paste was just not working for me.  But I truly have to say that I love how this card turned out. 

My one regret in the end was not the hot mess of a watercolor/emboss/stencil piece . . . nope . . . it was the fact that my Rock Candy Distress Stickles, which I put on using a stencil, made my sentiment run.  If you look close in the white area, there are dots of those Distress Stickles which were stenciled onto the card.  Note to self . . . need a permanent ink in the future if I'm going over that sentiment.

The challenge at CAS on Sunday was to use a stencil on your project.  I recently learned a lot about stencils in a class that we had a StampNation, so I was up for the challenge. 

I'm a big fan of black and white with a splash of color, and why not include a splash of three colors!  I love clean look of black and white.  And oh . . . that sparkle!

Stencils and Embossing at StampNation

Have I mentioned the Stencil Class at StampNation?

Well, perhaps I need to mention the Stencil Class at StampNation.

For a quarter and a nickel a day, I have a membership at my favorite place for inspiration - StampNation.  And the past week or so we have been enjoying a class that is all about stencils.

There are numerous cards created by the design team, and while I created a few, here is a card I created that was inspired by one of the designers.  This one combines embossing paste and colored embossing powder on black cardstock.  And I'm including it for the challenge at Happy Little Stampers, which was "stencil". 

The dimension of embossing paste and powder is awesome!  

Highly recommend you check it out.  I've met the most amazing crafty people there.

Mmmmm . . . Merry Monday

The challenge at Merry Monday this week was to create a card showcasing your favorite warm beverage.  I don't drink it often, but I love hot cocoa with mint.  The first time I had cocoa with a candy cane in it, I was at a local crop at an amazing hotel.  I remember the candy cane melted while I was eating brunch, and when I grabbed it to stir, the end was gone.  The cane was just sticking up and stuck to the side of the mug.  It was so yummy with the flavor of that melted candy cane.

But I digress!  I combined today's card with the use of stencils.  StampNation is having a free stencil class for their members . . . and nothing at StampNation expires, so if you join today you would get all the lessons.  You would get every video . . . every tutorial . . . every challenge (they never close).  The inspiration and friendship is amazing.

My stencil background was created using embossing paste and red geranium embossing paste from Ranger/Wendy Vecchi. 

My little squirrel image was colored using Zig Kuratake markers.

Merry Monday - Good Cheer

Just a Few Holiday Cards Before Vacation

I'm heading out on vacation, and I have to ask.  Is it normal to be stressed about the fact that you won't be creating for two solid weeks?  I'm anxious about flying and anxious about traveling alone.  I'm anxious about being away from home for so long.  I'm anxious about being away from my dogs.  And I'm anxious that I won't be doing any stamping, die cutting, embossing, inking, gluing.  My dogs and my crafting are my therapy. 

So before leaving, I took time away from packing to create a few cards.  First up is a card for Merry Monday . . . a card in blue and white with texture. 

I used Midnight Muse cardstock and ink from Stampin' Up.  My texture came from embossing paste and Ranger Distress Rock Candy glitter.  Love the look of those textured "ho's".  I carried the glitter over to my stamped Santa by using Liquid Glass and the Rock Candy glitter.  

My sentiments and stamps were from My Favorite Things.  My stencil and dies were from Simon Says Stamp.  I love finding ways to combine my supplies. 

For my second card, I created a card for Paper Smooches challenge.  Their challenge was to incorporate gold somewhere on my card. 

I used Ranger's Gold Tinsel embossing powder, which shines like glitter.  The stamp set is A Blessed Christmas from Paper Smooches. 

I may fit one or two more cards in tomorrow before leaving.  And if not, then I'll be back to creating in a few weeks.

Merry Monday Inspiration

This week's Merry Monday Challenge was to use stencils on a card.  So I pulled out a stencil I had bought some time ago but not used, and then I pulled out some embossing paste and had some fun! 

 I started by creating the panel, and then the real dilemma began.  What next?  I remembered I had that glittery Santa sticker.  From there is was all red glimmer.  I also added some Wink of Stella once the embossing paste was dry. 

Love that "wink" of glimmer!

I have two more cards to share this afternoon.  My "go to place" for inspiration - StampNation - was having a virtual retreat this past week.  I wanted to share a few more cards that I created there that were mixed with some other challenges. 

First up . . . for The Card Concept . . . they had an amazing inspiration photo . . .

I immediately thought of a deck of cards, but was also drawn to those chevrons in the photo.  I set out to create and Clean and Layered card.  One of the challenges at StampNation was to try a new technique.  So I wanted to do layering of stencils. 

 

 The spade, heart, diamond and club were stenciled onto the white cardstock first, and then I used a second stencil to add the chevron embossing. 

I used an opaque embossing paste and some glitter.  I was pleased with how it turned out, as it will be an awesome masculine card (and we all need those). 

My next card was for Color Throwdown, whose color scheme this week was . . .

Daisies . . . Kathleen Kelly's favorite flower in You've Got Mail.  StampNation had challenged us to make a thinking of your or miss you card.  So here is my card . . .

I used up supplies from a kit from The Stamps of Life, and just added some ink, Stickles and metallic spray.

Frosting and Sugar for Fusion Card Challenge

I said there'd be an Easter card, and this is as close as I could get.  It's a card, with a cupcake, with a peep on it!

This one is for the Fusion Card Challenge.  A sketch and an inspiration photo . . .

 

I have always wanted to create a card with a cupcake where I literally would frost the cupcake with embossing paste.  Today was the day!  Here is the result . . . 

I created my cupcake liner by scoring a piece of paper by hand, I would go up every 1/8th inch on the bottom, but 3/16th inch on the top and score, and then repeat until I had my cupcake paper.  I then hand cut a piece that I glued on for frosting, and I frosted it with Dreamweaver embossing paste, before adding some Sprinkles Glitter from The Stamps of Life.

Now the chick was another story.  I stamped him, colored with a yellow Copic marker and then covered with Faber Castell Glass Bead Glitter Gel. 

It's a little busy, but the end result is fun.  Wishing I had a cupcake with a Peep on it to cap off my evening.

Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?

Another holiday card, and just days before the holiday.  This one was designed with three challenges in mind, Merry Monday, whose challenge was a winter themed Christmas card, CAS-ology, whose challenge was "Snow", and then my StampNation group had a "Let it Snow" challenge. 

For this card, I stamped my design in the bottom right corner first using Memento ink so I could come back in later with my Copics.  Once the image was down, I used a stencil and embossing paste, masking off the areas over my stamped image.  I added glitter before the embossing paste dried.

Once the embossing paste was dry, I went in with my Copics . . . shades of green, red, brown and gray.  I just love this stamped image.  I toyed with leaving it all image, and putting the sentiment inside.  In the end, I decided to add the banner.  And here is a close-up of that glitter . . .

A fun card to make!

Starry Stenciled Background

One stencil . . . two different embossing pastes.

My May Simon Says Stamp Card Kit came with a star stencil.  With my black cardstock I created two different card bases and tried two different embossing pastes.  The first was a regular white one, and the second was a translucent . . . two very different looks.

So here is the traditional white matte embossing paste.  Again, this one is on black cardstock, and once dried I inked it up a bit with some yellow ink so it wouldn't be stark white since my pattern paper included cream and not white.  

I love the raised effect of the stars.  I used my pattern paper with the monsters at the bottom, and also found paper that said "things that go bump in the night."

For my second card, I used the translucent embossing paste, and while still wet I sprinkled on some Hero Arts glitter.  This is a completely different look . . . one I would definitely try again with another stencil down the road (my brain is percolating on it).

 These cards started out so similar, but they both took a different route.  Here's an angled view of that sparkle . . .
 

Looking forward to trying that glitter technique again with another stencil soon.  Wait for it.
